Backyard Deck by Archadeck, St. Louis Mo – Natural Wood and Metallic Accents

As another year comes to a close, Archadeck in St. Louis is excited (and more than ready!) for the next ‘design and build’ season for outdoor living to take-off.

What can I say?

‘Outdoor living’… it’s our ‘thing’.

But before jumping into 2014, full-steam-ahead, let’s wrap-up this year with a round-up of outdoor living trends with staying-power.

As a leading contractor for decks and other outdoor spaces, we have the privilege of talking and meeting with St. Louis homeowners on a daily basis.

And from these discussions, we’re armed with a slew of relevant, first-hand knowledge and ‘on-the-ground’ experience about popular outdoor designs, materials and accessories.

More importantly, though, we look beyond short-term ‘fads’ and bring you practical ideas that actually work… and work well.

So before the new year launches, let’s glance in the review mirror and see what was ‘hot’ and what ‘worked’ in 2013 and beyond.

Combination projects are on-the-rise:

More than ever, customers want a deck WITH a screened porch, a pergola, an enclosed patio or other outdoor structure.

As it turns out, folks love ceilings and walls for their homes — both inside and outside.  And as a result, we routinely build custom outdoor spaces — of all sizes — designed for multiple purposes.

In the stratosphere of the outdoor living industry, this trend is referred to as ‘functionality and value’.

Translation:  The outdoor addition gets plenty of use and it adds true dollar-value to your property.

Material choices are on-the-rise:

Years and years ago, when Archadeck first began, products for outdoor structures were rather limited.  Today is a whole different ballgame and the sky’s the limit for total customization.

With each and every component of your outdoor addition, there comes an abundance of options.

From floor surface to ceiling finish and everything-in-between (rails, balusters, post covers and caps), there are choices.

Traditional wood or exotic hardwood?  Vinyl, composite, capped composite?  A combination of materials?  And what about… Graining?  Texture?  Color?  Maintenance requirements?  Price?

To homeowners, the sheer number of choices can seem baffling.  But there’s no need to worry.  A great contractor like Archadeck will guide you right through the process, without a hitch.

Accessories and add-ons are on-the-rise:

Industry-wide there’s been an uptick in outdoor living accessories and add-ons.

As people look to improve their outdoor space, comfort and style have become very important.

Examples shown (above and left) include lighting, post wraps and caps, electrical and wireless access and of course, comfortable furnishings.

Think about it this way:  Outdoor lighting is definitely popular, but forget those old flood-lights and opt for soft deck lighting or a screened-porch ceiling light instead.

And gone are the days of metal tables and chairs that are stiff, uncomfortable and prone to rusting.  (Oh and leave behind the faded plastic sets too!)

Instead look for outdoor living and dining room sets, complete with weatherproof cushions.  Outdoor furniture comes in all different prices and is readily available at big box stores and specialty stores, alike.

Outdoor accessories and add-ons completely (completely!) change an uninteresting backyard structure into a usable outdoor space.

There you have it, Archadeck’s 2013 round-up of outdoor living design trends with staying power.
