Every home has a particular style.  In fact, most homes have characteristics of more than one architectural genre.

And the features of a ‘contemporary’ home are uniquely distinct.

So if your house has contemporary elements, inside or out, your outdoor spaces should follow-suit with a comparable design flow.

Which leads us to the topic for today’s post:  “What makes a deck design, contemporary?”

The absolute best way to design and build a contemporary deck is by keeping both ‘simplicity’ and ‘drama’ in mind.

I know.  I know.  Combining “simplicity’ AND ‘drama’ sounds like an oxymoron.

And to further muddy the waters, the term ‘contemporary’ is somewhat subjective and is a very broad reference.  But as a classification, there’s an undeniable visual idiosyncrasy that simply shouts ‘contemporary’ architecture.

Examples include:

  • Bold geometric shapes that are pronounced; sometimes irregular and asymmetrical; chic.
  • Clear horizontal and vertical lines softened by curves; sometimes slim, thin or ‘flat’ in dimension or sometimes tall and irregular.
  • Little-to-no-embellishment or ornamentation; a tell-tale, intentional simplicity.
  • Striking form and composition; sleek, open and well-connected to the outdoors.
  • Natural-looking building materials, often wood, mixed with glass and metal.
  • Neutral color palette relying on white, cream, brown, taupe and gray, usually combined with splashes of bold color.
  • Tranquil, sustainable and eco friendly; ‘green’ elements ie. solar lighting; ‘right-sized’ and efficient.

Key takeaways:

Contemporary outdoor spaces such as backyard decks, are visually striking.

Noticeable features include a focus on the basics – clean lines, shape and form with easy movement including curvatures.

The overall style is natural and neutral; yet intense color may be introduced in deck railing, plants, furniture cushions, pillows or outdoor rugs to create a striking focal-point.

Contemporary decks come in all different shapes and sizes yet there are identifiable, uniquely distinctive qualities with a stylish look, all their own.
