Color schemes and comfortable furnishings are an important part of your home décor — whether inside or out — and so is lighting.  Lighting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get the biggest-bang-for-your-buck with a deck, screened porch or pergola addition because it extends the use of your outdoor space into the evening hours.

Outdoor lighting is a must-have feature in 2015.

Lighting makes a style statement and sets a distinctive mood.  It provides safety and security after dark.

The right lighting is a key detail to make your deck, porch, pergola or other outdoor space a true extension of your home and landscape.

Gazebo, Pergola, Deck or Porch Lights

When it comes to lighting an outdoor space such as a pergola, gazebo, deck or porch, there are several options.

String lights

It’s common for folks to use weatherproof string lights during the holidays.  But you can use string lights for any outdoor space to create a soft glow and cozy atmosphere, anytime of the year.  Simply string the lights in-and-out of the pergola slats, porch or gazebo columns or deck railing.  This method is a cost-effective, non-permanent and easy-to-change light source.

Mounted or hanging lights

An outdoor space such as a pergola, covered deck or screen porch, depending on the size, will be well-lit with a mounted or hanging overhead fixture… or two or three.  And best of all this type of lighting often comes with a built-in fan for stirring-up a cool breeze too.  Available in different prices and styles (from traditional to contemporary to eclectic) you’re sure to find one to match your taste and budget.

Inset lights or skylights

If your outdoor space has a solid roof then consider other sources of lighting such as inset lights (canned lighting) or skylights.  These lighting features are used in conjunction with, and as a supplement to, other lighting.  For additional brightness use lanterns, floor lamps, or even candlelight to complement activities such as reading in the afternoon, dining at twilight or entertaining into wee hours of the morning.

Deck railing, steps and stairs

The best outdoor lighting will illuminate your entire deck for safety, aesthetics and ambiance.  Mix-it-up with a comprehensive lighting plan.  For looks and livability, light-up the deck floor, the rails and the staircase by incorporating illumination into the step risers, railing posts, post caps and more.

And don’t forget options such as soft landscape lighting, bright flood lights, or even small ‘task’ lights for activities such as grilling; large globe lights, lanterns, exotic tiki torches or delicate floating voltives set the mood too.
