Last in our series The 5 Most Popular Deck Designs Explained is the fabulous and functional screened-in deck.  Now you might be thinking, “But what are the benefits of a screened-in deck design?”

Well, a screened deck is, hands-down, the best way to make the most of your home and lot.  As an outdoor space, it’s part-deck, part-house, part-yard.  It often becomes THE favorite spot for everyone — adults, kids and even the pets!

With a screened deck, scorching heat, pesky bugs or a rain shower won’t put an end to your backyard fun.  The ceiling is ideal for a mounted fan, screens keep the bugs-at-bay and the roof provides shade and shelter which creates a functional outdoor room for (nearly) year-round use.

There are, however, important structural considerations.

In our previous article, Screened Porches: Windows, Walls, Doors and Floors, we discuss these four structural elements.

In all probability, the floor should match your decking.  If, however, your property is best suited for a screened-in deck underneath an elevated deck, a patio often becomes the ‘floor’.

When a screened-in room is built right on-top of a deck, cedar and pine are favorite materials.  Hardwood decking is gorgeous too.  If you prefer to steer-clear of wood, then composite, capped composite or vinyl decking are fantastic low-maintenance options instead.

Beyond ‘floors, doors, walls, windows’, the ceiling and roof design for your screened-in deck is influential both structurally and aesthetically.

Do you prefer a vaulted or flat ceiling? Enclosed or exposed rafters?  And how about building material style and other accessories?  Pine, cedar, hardwood; beadboard, plywood, vinyl; or a combination thereof?  Ceiling fan; electrical lights; skylights?

And what about the roof choice (hip, gable, shed) and how will it tie-in with your existing home?
