Whether you’re planning to build a deck, pergola, porch or another outdoor living space, choosing the right contractor for the job is, without a doubt, the most important step you’ll take.  And the process of choosing is easy when you know what to look for.

Think Local

Choose a local company with a positive reputation.  Experienced contractors in your area will be aware of style preferences, building codes, the terrain and the weather conditions that impact the design and building of an outdoor space.

Here in the Greater St. Louis region, permits and building codes can be particularly tricky.  But the building process will be hassle-free when you hire an experienced contractor who routinely works throughout the area and understands the regulations for building within each city.

In addition, neighborhood HOAs may have special requirements aside from the city regulations.  So definitely, ‘think local’.

Listen To Others

Client references and professional industry organizations are another way to gauge a contractor’s work.

It’s not unusual for homeowners to readily refer their neighbors, friends and family members to their favorite contractor.  Personal referrals are a source of pride for any builder.  And any contractor will love to show-off their portfolio of projects.  So just ask!

Check License and Insurance

No matter the scope of your project, make certain your prospective builder is licensed and insured according to government requirements.  Period.

Compare Apples-To-Apples

If you obtain bids from a number of deck contractors, make sure each one is bidding on the exact same scope and quality of work and materials.  If there are differences, just ask why.  It’s really that simple!

For example, if your contractor is suggesting a ‘wood’ deck find out the specific type because prices will vary greatly between PT lumber, natural cedar, wood composite, and exotic hardwoods.

Get A Warranty

An outdoor living space is an investment.  And every contractor should offer a written warranty to prove they stand behind their craftsmanship for any project, large or small.

Stay Within Budget

And if your dream project is beyond your current budget, ask your contractor about the option of building in stages.  Possibly start with a deck and later add a pergola or a screen porch too.  Computerized design renderings are especially helpful for larger project visualization.
