When it comes to home improvement trends in 2015, outdoor spaces are simply not optional.  They are expected!

A backyard addition — such as a deck, screened porch, or patio pergola — is a must-have home feature and outdoor living is no longer a ‘fad’.

Size doesn’t seem to matter either.   Modest, minimalist designs with clean lines are really popular but so are weightier structures.  And of course, award-winning projects chock-full of fashionable flair are OK too!

In either scenario, ‘wasted space’ is a huge ‘no-no’.  Smart and efficient architecture is in demand with an emphasis on proportional form and tasteful decor to blend with your home — both inside and out.

So let’s look more closely at the ‘how, why and what’ of outdoor living in 2015.

How and why has  ‘outdoor living’ become so popular?

Well, it’s really pretty simple.  As real estate values continue to recover from the historic housing meltdown, consumers overwhelmingly prefer practical home layouts with useful living spaces.

And in order to max-out the functionality and monetary worth of their property, homeowners need to create space-savvy, livable outside spaces too.

But here’s an interesting fact.  Apparently there’s no ‘one right way’ to approach an outdoor addition.   Any outdoor space is a good outdoor space.

Every person, every property and every neighborhood is different which causes customization to reign supreme.

So how exactly do you choose the best building materials and custom plans?   Start by deciding how you want to use the space outside your house.

For example, do you prefer intimate gatherings?  Then you may want a special conversation area such as a shaded patio out in the yard.

Or do you love to cook and dine outdoors… but hate bugs?  Then a screened-in porch with a small deck area for firing-up the grill might be perfect.

On the other hand, do you dream of lighting-up your deck for a rockin’ evening of entertainment?  Or does a cozy outdoor space to enjoy roasting marshmallows float your boat?  Get the picture?

What was trending in 2015?

Four trends seemed to really stand-out among St. Louis homeowners looking to add an outdoor space.

  • Lighting to extend outdoor living into the evening hours
  • Outdoor cooking and dining areas as an alternative to meals indoors
  • Cost-effective comfort and conveniences such as shade and privacy
  • Building materials:  high tech, low maintenance, natural woods or mix-and-match?  Anything goes.
