According to a March 2012 article found at

“Outdoor living remains one of the fastest growing segments of residential construction.”

According to editor and builder, David Barista:

“As homeowners look to extend living and entertainment spaces without greatly impacting budgets, more are choosing to build-out formal outdoor spaces. ”

This conclusion resulted from comparing values for 35 remodeling projects in 80 markets across the country.

Upscale remodeling projects have certainly been affected by the weak economy.  However, the 2010-2011 Remodeling vs Cost vs Value Report clearly shows that decks are an exterior project that “not only provide the most value but are among the least expensive improvements for a home”.
